Chicago is ranked as an "alpha world city" which reflects its important role in the global economic system. It has been rated as having the most balanced economy in the US due to its high level of diversification.
Chicago was named the fifth most important business centre in the world in the most recent Worldwide Centres of Commerce Index (MasterCard Worldwide Centres of Commerce Index, 2008).
Chicago is a global leader in options, futures and derivatives trading and leads the way nationally in industries such as business and financial services, manufacturing, information technology, health services, and transportation and distribution.
